Chuah Seow Keng exhibited his abilities as an artist from an early age and is renowned for his batik and watercolour paintings as well as his sculptures. Having Chuah Thean Teng, the pioneer of batik art, as a father certainly played a big part in his career as his father exposed him to the world of batik painting. Born in 1945 in Kelantan, he went to Wurzburg, Germany in 1968 when he was awarded scholarship to study at the Suddeutsche KunststoffZentrum, specialising in fibreglass sculpture. In 1988, two batik paintings by Seow Keng were selected by UNICEF for their greeting card selections and he was awarded the Certificate of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement at the Artitudes 7th International Art Competition in New York, U.S.A in 1989.
